Advert Analysis

Denotation:
In this print advert i can see; a young child in a blue shirt, the background looks empty and it looks hot, he is in a village or town sort of area, the water aid logo is in the top left corner and there is a big text reading "Dig toilets, not graves". The text is written in the same colour scheme and font as the water aid symbol. The boy looks quite upset, which can represent that he doesn't have water and needs it because of the heat that he's living in.

Connotation:
The choice of the colour white implies purity which has connotations of how the boy is innocent in this situation and desperately needs clean water and help from the charity. The use of the text reading " Dig toilets, not graves" can imply that people in his town or village are dying because of not having clean water to drink. We know the cause of death can be not having clean water to drink because its a water aid advert asking others to help them. His facial expression is not happy as hes portrayed with a sad kind of emotionless expression which will make the viewers feel sympathetic towards the young boy making them want to donate and help out. His shirt can connote that he is maybe quite poor because its not well fitted, quite loose and a bit worn down.

Analysis:
The colour palette is very soft and the use of the blue can suggest the clean water and blue represents sadness and how this is a sad situation.  The producers have done this deliberately to make the target audience feel more sympathetic as the light colours set a sadder mood. The colour scheme is not very balanced as the blue is more centered at the boy and the sandy colours are in the background to show the dryness and hotness of the area and how it is vital to drink clean water in those conditions.
This reveals that the charity believe that child is the focal point of the advert and also how children are the main focus of society and they could have used a young child to make the audience fell more sympathetic and willing to help out because children are usually looked at more innocently.

Denotation:
In this film poster, i can see: a big tree with a rope and a loop through it, a single house behind the tree, there is also a thick layer of fog over the house and tree and it also very dull and grey.
Also right next to the tree you can see the shadow of a silhouette of a woman who could be a ghost.
The font and text is all in capitals and also is all communicated in black which is a very dark colour scheme. The fog can represent an unwanted being or spirit in the movie. At the bottom on the poster i can see the release date for the movie which is July 16th.

Connotation:
The use of the dark and earthy colour palette sets an ominous and dark mood because it suggests there is not much happiness or joy in this movie. Covering the house and top two thirds of the film poster is a thick layer of fog which connotes that there possibly is an unwanted presence lurking around, also links to the fact that ghosts and spirits are usually shadows or a translucent to invisible shape, which is exactly how fog is portrayed. Also in the bottom third of the film poster, specifically at the bottom right there is a silhouette of a woman, possibly the woman who hung herself on the tree in front. The fact that the house in by itself in the woods suggests that this family or the people living there are isolated and not apart of a community, they are left alone with each other and the presence of the unwanted.

Analysis:
The colours chosen are from a natural colour palette as they are green and browns of the grass and also trees. The producers have done this deliberately as they have used earthy colours to possibly contrast to the movie having unearthly spirits and ghosts. To give the audience/consumers of the film poster, a hint towards the movie its self they have included the shadow on a person at the bottom right corner to grasp the audience attention and then let them make links between the person and the rope around the tree which will make them wonder and question so then making the viewers wanting to see the movie which will then increase their sales and profit.
