Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
A passive audience is an audience that takes on messages from the media and do not question it, they are more gullible to believing the media instead of questioning it.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:
An active audience is an audience which questions the media and does not always believe the information given out to the audience.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and always take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: the news like bbc as it provides audiences with daily and relevant information and informs us about things going on in the world

IDENTITY: Keeping up with the Kardashians because i am interested in fashion, beauty and makeup and the show is centred around their lives which include insight on their makeup lines and clothing lines

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Brooklyn 99 because its an entertaining and comedic show and it is based around jokes and humour and makes me forget about reality

RELATIONSHIPS: TV shows like Love Island because the shows centred around forming relationships and finding 'true love' and movies like Kissing Booth because its a teen romantic movie as they fall in love but then it also shows the problems that can form in a relationship and how they get passed it. Also Love Island is a show that is aired almost everyday for an 8 week period which leads to audiences building relationships with each islander and the show allows you to vote which can make viewers more emotional and gain a sort of sympathy towards an islander and this attaches them to show and brings in more and more daily viewers to the show.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications

Blue planet informs us about ocean life and what happens in nature so it falls under the Information/Surveillance category in the Blumler and Katz uses of media. It teaches the audience about underwater animals and educates the audience about how they live whilst also entertaining them which can be seen as a form of escapism as the audience is focused on the animals lives instead of their own, so it can also fall under the Diversion/Entertainment category.
