Reception Theory

Task 1

1) What is the preferred reading of a media text
the preferred reading is the message or ideology/ belief the producers want you to go away with.

2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
The oppostional reading is when the consumer takes away an opposite message or ideology/ belief than the producers want you to go away with.

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
The teenagers in the film are portaryed as reckless and they will be looked down on and in a negative view because as it is revealed, they killed Harry's friend and this makes them come across as dangerous and vioent.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
They might be possibly offended because a lot of young people live on estates and possibly do not act like those teenagers and also would not want to be catergorised or grouped with those teenagers in the film.It also gives a bad outlook on life in a council estate, this is because it shows the violence and unwanted behaviour and activities that are carried out on those estates.

Task 2
5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
Image result for fenty beauty advertThe preferred reading of the advert would be what the producers want you to take away from this, which would be that the burger looks tasty, so that the consumers will feel convinced to go buy it.
The negotiated reading is when previously held beliefs or ideas influence the audience so they reject or accept different parts of the message being put across. The conusmers could possibly hold old beliefs or rumours that have been said about McDonalds against the advert, which will refrain them from buying the product. The oppostional reading is when you take away an opposite message. The message that could be taken away is that McDonalds has produced another unhealthy product and it is increasing the level of obesity.

Task 3
6) Now find your own advertisement and write a 150+ word analysis using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

The preferred reading of this beauty advert is that the brand is very diverse and they are more advanced and better than other brands because they have a bigger range of shades and skin tones to choose from. The negotiated reading would be that you will definitely look like this by using this foundation, or you will be more beautiful if you use this product and you will look like Huda. The oppositional reading is that without this product the brand is implying that women are not beautiful enough, and need to use this to look better. The name of the product is faux filter foundation
which can imply to consumers that because women cannot have a social media filter on their face in the real world, they can use this as a filter on their face to fit in with society's desired beauty trend. The product can give off the message that women need to have a filter on their face because they are not 'pretty' or 'beautiful' without a filter. If the message if perceived like this from an audience it can upset a lot of people because it suggests natural beauty isn't attractive and putting a temporary filter on your face will improve your attractiveness.
