Industry and Audience power essay

The internet has given audiences much more power than ever before.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?

In this essay I will be arguing as to why I agree with the statement “the internet has given audiences much more power than ever before". I agree because the internet has allowed audiences to get more in touch and interactive which the media as in: news channels, tv shows, youtubers and celebrities all allow audiences to get in contact with the media product through emails, messages, dms and meet and greet sorted through the internet.

The music industry has been massively impacted due to the increase in technology and platforms to the upload of music content to YouTube and Soundcloud. For upcoming artists it is a lot easier for them to put themselves out there as in ‘bedroom band’ artists are ‘self-publicised’ and they do not have or need any backing from a music label. Advantages due to this are minimal amount of production value needed as artists can use simple setups to ‘self-publicise’ themselves online to promote their material. Also audiences and consumers have more of a variety of choice as a record label is not putting an artist out there that no one has seen before. Audiences have more control and this links to why I believe the internet has given audiences more power than before. Audiences can view and like videos on YouTube and this allows upcoming artists to get spotted. It is also less of a risk for record labels to sign an artist who has received a lot of attention from audiences through the internet. However producers and record labels have limited amount of artists that they may sign who are worthy and will make them money and profit.  Also audiences are more interested in the song than the music video and fans may not appreciate the music video as much as this could lessen the profit made, also less worthy artists are being recognised due to the amount of views they have received.

The film and television industry has been impacted and changed due to streaming and catch-up services that are available 24/7 and on demand. The rise of technology has increased the amount of consumers that watch online tv programs on tablets, mobile phones and laptops, this has given consumers more opportunity to watch film and tv at any time. Also streaming services like Netflix have started to produce their own content . An advantage of internet affecting the film and tv industry is that shows and movies are accessible 24 hours a day and viewers can ‘binge watch’ series at once, which has replaced the idea of a traditional 'appointment to view' format. There is more choice and variety with films and tv, they are not just restricted to watching it on tv or at a cinema.
However the monthly cost of a subscription to the online streaming service can tie viewers in for periods of time and this can become quite costly. Also there are a few limitations for those who are not comfortable with on-the-go technology and would much rather prefer to watch television the 'traditional' way on a normal tv instead on a laptop or even watching shows on Netflix or any other steaming service.
Most importantly not all shows and movies are on demand or available on specific streaming services and some take time to be released. Also watching a movie or show on a tablet or phone can be not as pleasant as first thought, this could appeal to less and less viewers and will encourage them to watch their shows on a normal tv which restricts the on demand availability as someone has to be at home or at a house etc. to watch something on a tv.

The internet has drastically changed the newspaper industry because of the increase in online news. Citizen journalism has increased massively due to the internet and now anyone can report news live and this has lead to print sales being decreased due to the rise in online news coverage. A few advantages of the internet impacting the news are that the news is updated a lot more frequently and audiences do not have to wait until the next day for a print newspaper to come out or have to wait for the news to be aired n television. Also another benefit of online news is that the environment has been benefited for moving content online, there is also more choice of news platforms to read and choose from. On the other hand fake news sources are problematic and some facts cannot be regulated.

In conclusion, I fully agree with the statement as how I have demonstrated in my paragraphs, I believe that the power that audiences have is not a bad thing as technology is going to evolve whether we like it or not and as a part of the audience we have to learn to fit in with these changes even if it has to do with the media. I believe that power from the audiences is a good thing because producers can hear their opinions and voice themselves.
