Gender representation in advertising
1) Find three adverts featuring women that are from the 1950s or 1960s. Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post. Hint: You may wish to look at car, perfume or cleaning products but can use any product you wish.
2) Find three adverts featuring women that are from post-2000. Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post.
3) What stereotypes of women can you find in the 1950s and 1960s adverts? Give specific examples.
in the 50s and 60s ads they discriminated against women a lot as they stereotyped them domestically and made it seem women only had roles in the kitchen and house. also women were made to be subservient to men and obey them and essentially have no say or opinion.
4) What stereotypes of women can you find in the post-2000s adverts? Give specific examples.
in the mr clean advert its clearly reinforcing the stereotype that women should stay at home and do the washing and cleaning and domestic roles whilst the men go out and work and bring back the money for the family as the primary bread winners. It also implies that rather than a mother enjoying mothers day and relaxing she should do what "really matters" and clean their homes. it suggest that this is the only purpose women have and when buying this product they should spend their time cleaning using the product.
also in the gucci advert women are being sexualised a lot more than in the 50s and 60s as in those adverts they were more related to domestic roles and solely being a mum whereas now women are still related to those stereotypes whereas they are also linked to being sexual objects for a mans pleasure and to seduce and please men. in the mr clean we can see that women in society still hold a negative front as they are still being told that they are made for the kitchen. As this ad was made fairly recently -in 2011- it really shuts down the idea that stereotypes against women and discrimination is no longer relevant but clearly it is.
5) How do your findings suggest representations of gender have changed over the last 50 years?
50 years ago stereotypes were more focused on cooking, cleaning and being a good wife. nowadays we still have those stereotypes but they are lessened and stereotypes towards women now focus more on beauty standards and appearing sexually and attractive to men. stereotypes have changed but there is still a long way to come from sexism and discrimination.
