Coursework photography

 1) Plan out every aspect of your mise-en-scene for your photoshoot:

C: Costume

for costume i want Nicole to be wearing something black and simple, some marks and dirt on the dress from the basement where she is to imply her distress and physical abuse she's encountered.

L: Lighting

dark lighting to further reinforce the conventions of a horror movie and to add to the mysterious and ominous tone, also to imply her oblivious state regarding where she is. darkness can trigger fear and panic. in the third picture i want there to be a light coming through the door where a shadow of a standing man is. this will trigger the audiences interest and attention. it further communicates the unknown and the sinister tone of the movie.  the binary opposition of light (v) dark is portrayed in these pictures however as we see in picture 3, coming through the door(light) is a man which even though is in the light. we can only see his shadow suggesting he brings the darkness.

A: Actor placement and expression

to clearly illustrate the plot of the movie, i want to have Nicole tied up, sitting on the floor to effectively show her hostage role in this scene of the movie. definite terror and fear across her face to reinforce the horror movie convention of dismay and distress.

in the second photo i want to reveal the diaries documenting David's previous murders and the sketches of floor plans of houses he possesses. this is a part of mise-en-scene. as she discovers these diaries i want to effectively capture her disbelief and life-changing realisation. i want to use an extreme close up to zoom in on her face, showing her shock, and to emphasise the significant of this moment.

the third photo will be taken in a high angle looking down on Nicole and a medium shot to get both the mans shadow and Nicole's position on the floor captured. by only revealing a silhouette of a man instead of his face connotes danger and an eerie tone.

M: Make-up

to convey her distressed and shattered mental state, i plan to have her makeup smudged and mascara running from her eyes to perfectly demonstrate she has been crying, which will cause audiences to wonder why and who has caused her to cry.

P: Props

the diary and sketches will be vital in communicating mystery and obscurity to the audience triggering them to wonder why and what it contains, whose house plan is that and more.

S: Setting

the dark room successfully reinforces conventions of the horror movie. we associate dark with evil, foul, wicked, secrecy, being hidden and mysterious. the dark setting triggers questions and inquiries from audiences.

2) Take your photos and post the best FIVE images you take to your blog. You should be able to upload them directly from your phone.
