Representation
1) List the people, places and groups represented in the poster. E.g. men, women, teenagers etc.
The poster includes a range of characters from different ethnic backgrounds and different ages and an equal amount of men to women. The audience could perceive them as troubled teenagers as they are sitting on what looks like a an estate which can link them to being in a lower class in society and also one of the individuals is holding a bat which connotes to violence.
2) Are there any stereotypes you can identify?
Immediately we can identify a relation to gangs because of the background which is quite dark, dull and grey also the whereabouts looks like an estate or top of a roof. The characters are wearing dark coloured clothes and oversized hoodies and tracksuit bottoms which are stereotyped usually to lower class also they often prefer particular brands of shoes, pants or shirts which some male characters are wearing. Also another stereotype would be the baseball bat held in the mixed race character's hand which could connote to that particular race being predominantly violent. The fact that they are on an estate building could mean the working class are more likely to be involved in gang culture compared to the higher class.
3) What is the preferred reading of this poster?
the preferred reading of the poster would be that they are a group of friends who are transitioning into adults however have been easily influenced by gang culture due to the atmosphere they've grown up in. It also shows the difficulties that teenagers may face in our current society.
4) What is the oppositional reading of this poster?
An oppositional view might be the fact that a young, black male is holding a baseball bat which they might argue as racist due to typical stereotypes related to black minors in today's society. Another might be it is judgmental towards those who live in council/estate homes as not all children who grow up there are exactly similar/involved in gang culture as the characters displayed.
Extension: What does this poster suggest about British society?
this poster suggests that teenagers living in a British society nowadays are stereotyped into immediately being violent if associated with a council flat or estate. Also they are portrayed as independent because in this poster one of the characters is holding a baseball bat meaning he has to defend for himself. British society is portrayed as grey and dull as the film poster background is very dull and dark, there is no sunshine or bright light but instead a dark atmosphere that can connote to danger and bright lighting suggest there is hope so possibly it means the characters lack hope.
